EPL is considered, the most competitive league of all the major leagues. All the games in EPL are very high energy and consuming. This often results in injuries to players. This season was no different. The Premier League was plagued with injuries and teams were having difficulty in finding the right combination. Players on the bench, quite often, have to adapt themselves in the positions vacant in the team. Sometimes it ruins the career of the player and sometimes it is a blessing in disguise.
Here are 5 players who have successfully transformed themselves into the role of new positions:-
#1 Adam Lallana:-
Liverpool signed Lallana for a whooping 25 million Euros, which was considered very high at that time for PFA player of the year nominated player. It was assumed that this would be another failure of Liverpool in the transfer market. The player didn’t have speed to go past players, nor did he have the bag of trickeries to nutmeg players. He was previously playing in the attacking 3 of Liverpool. However, his limitations didn’t let him succeed. In this season, he is given a deeper role by Klopp in the midfield. This helped the player to utilize every bit of his potential and give excellent performances day in and out. He has excellent control on ball and gives incisive passes to set the tone of the attack. He has now become a mainstay in the Liverpool XI.
#2 Alexis Sanchez:-
The former Barcelona player has always played in the wings. He had 29 goals to his name in the 2 seasons, he played in EPL. Seeing this staggering numbers, no one doubted his ability as a winger. However, Wenger was not one of them and he saw Sanchez as a striker. Albeit, Arsenal have not performed well this season, but their best spell came, when Sanchez played as an out and out striker. His shooting skills have helped him to push the ball in the net and his pace has helped him penetrate through the defences. He has exposed the weak defences of teams on many occasions, playing as a striker. This certainly has been a revelation by Wenger, which would help Sanchez to see himself as a striker.
#3 Victor Moses:-
One of the many young talents of Chelsea, Victor Moses, didn’t find a place in the Chelsea’s first team. Like many other young talents he was loaned out to Liverpool, Stoke City and West Ham. He was destined to become one of the many wasted talents by Chelsea. However, the arrival of Conte proved to be a blessing for him. Conte saw the talent of the youngster and made him play as full back in the team. With the presence of Hazard, Costa and Willian, a attacking role was very unlikely for the youngster. He naturally fitted the role of full-back because of his strength and pace. He has transformed himself into a full-back, who often leads the attack through the wings. He has been a major building block in the success of the club.
#4 Cesar Azpilicueta:-
He is a natural centre-back player, who used to play as a make shift left-back, in the presence of Filipe Luis. Conte has deployed him as a right sided centre-back to cover Moses at the back. He is one of the main reasons for the success of Moses in the wings. Conte rates him very high and this change in position has been revelation for him. But Credits to the player, who has successfully adapted to the position.
#5 James Milner:-
The player made his name as a midfielder. When he arrived in Liverpool, he often took the place of a striker, due to injury problems. The player is versatile in its every sense. He has played as a winger for Liverpool and also as a right-back. In the mid-season, when the strikers and the mid-fielders were doing well, Milner still made it to the team. This time he made into the team as a left-back. Milner is naturally right-footed and playing with the weaker foot, in the left-back position could have been a disaster. But, Milner has stood up to the role and performed reasonably well. James Milner has truly defined the meaning of term versatile, on the football pitch.
