Barcelona vs. Juventus has been an absolute cracker of a fixture. It was a match between Barca’s attack and Juve’s defense. With MSN at the top for Barca, they were heavily touted to win the match. But the Italian side did manage to turn things around and hit the Catalonian’s an almost knockout punch. In the first leg, Juventus destroyed Barcelona, winning the home leg 3-0.
Barca fans were expecting a similar comeback that Barcelona pulled off in the preceding knockout stage against PSG. The stage was set for comeback leg at Camp Nou, there was a flood of fans in the stadium. But all they witnessed was Juventus’s strong defense, which couldn’t be penetrated. The home leg for
Barca, also, didn’t do any wonders for them and the match was drawn are nil-nil. Juventus proceeded to the next round of semi-final on the aggregate score of 3-0.
Here are 5 reasons why Barcelona couldn’t win against Juventus
1. Luis Enrique’s experiments this season
The Catalonian’s are famous for their tiki-taka style of play but this season they have rather tried to lose their identity and have not hesitated to play long balls. Enrique also has made them play with 3 man defense which has produced mixed results. They didn’t quite look like the side they used to be in the 2015-16 season and were always playing the chasing game against the Italian club. They didn’t look confident and the first half disaster at Turin haunted them out of the Champions League.
2. Mid-field worries
Although the Catalonian’s are placed second in the La-Liga points table, their mid-field hasn’t been in best of their form lately. Iniesta, who is the main stay in the mid-field, hardly had any effective influence this season. Busquets is a player who gets the ball for Barca in the mid-field and has them helped them through the years to maintain possession. He wasn’t available for the home leg. With the old lady’s being typically defensive side, this kind of form wasn’t sufficient to break the wall. There weren’t enough dangerous balls being put forward for MSN to work. Although they had good possession, they couldn’t convert it into anything dangerous.
3. Ignored Juve’s attacking abilities
Barcelona had an unforgettable first half in Turin. It was truly a master class performance given by the old lady in every sense. It looked like Barcelona came with a mindset just to attack and left huge holes in the defense. They have been known to have leakages in their defense but not have ignored the excellent form of Argentinean Dybala. The Messi team-mate for Argentina destroyed the Catalonians defense and scored a scintillating brace.
4. Depend too much on Messi
Messi is a special player, who can change the complexion of any match. He has been in top form this season as he usually is and helped Barca in their dire times to victory. Such an amazing player too can have a bad day and when that happened, the Catalonians have looked helpless. This was the case again in the home leg against the lady. Messi had only 1 shot on goal and didn’t have a good game, which was reflected in Barca’s performance.
5. Catalonians away form and Old lady’s home form
The men in black and white are going on an undefeated streak at home this season. From the starting of the season, they have been the team to be defeated. They carried the same form against Barcelona and thrashed them at home. On the other hand, the Catalonians haven’t performed exceedingly well this season in the away games. They continued their tendency to lose points and important matches away from home.
Luis Enrique is leaving the Catalonians at the end of this season. He has managed to win the treble with in the 2014-15 season. He would have wanted to end his contract with Barca on a high with the Champions League trophy. Nevertheless, they still have the league to concentrate on and also the King’s cup. They are scheduled to play final of King’s cup later this month.
