Ground Taxis are now becoming a thing of the past. Global warming and the population increase made commuting more and more difficult. This led to experts developing alternate transportation methods. As a result, we had Hyperloop(Tubes), SeaBubbles (Water), Aeromobil (Sky). Now another start up is trying to make a mark.
Lilium is an Aviation start-up based in Munich, Germany and is founded by Daniel Wiegand, Sebastian Born, Patrick Nathen and Matthias Meiner who are experts in their own fields. It is funded by leading world-class venture capital funds and also European Space Agency (ESA).
The vision of Lilium is to enable people to fly anywhere, anytime. Started in 2015, the company thoroughly worked on its first all-electric aircraft that can be used as the air taxi.
What’s the Buzz?
Lilium came into limelight because of its maiden flight that took place in Germany. The flight is controlled remotely and the jet is Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) type. The take-off and landing of the jet are tested and the forward movement is also tried. The test was completed successfully which leads to a manned flight in the near future.
The timeline of this jet development and production is as follows
All About the Jet
The Lilium jet is intelligently designed utilizing every aspect for maximum efficiency. Lilium tells that “Simplicity was our Most Complicated Goal.” The challenge is to make a VTOL flight which can cruise or travel at high speeds in the air. This is achieved by using 10-metre-long wings with 12 movable flaps containing multiple jet engines. The flaps can be tilted to achieve vertical or horizontal movement.
Electric Jet engines are turbofan type which allows them to run quietly with zero emissions. The battery technology is highly advanced and the design makes it a low power consumption vehicle which is the kind we need in this fuel-scarce world.
The lift of the vehicle is very easy as a lot of weight has been removed thanks to the carbon fiber used in the construction. Carbon fiber which is custom-built for Lilium is five times stronger than aluminum and a lot lighter making it the best choice.
What Makes Lilium Jet Special?
Lilium jet holds a lot of potentials when compared to its competitors like Aeromobil because of the amount of planning and design that made the final product. With a simplistic design and carefully planned layout, here are some of the interesting features that make it stand out from the others.
Take-off & Landing – Vertical (Ideal for safe and quick evacuation and extraction)
Power – All electric 36 Engines powered lift concept makes it versatile
Transport – 5 passenger seats with bottom storage and full glass cockpit for 360-degree views that can be called by a single touch on mobile
Speed – Low noise operation with a top speed of 300 kmph
Range – High battery capacity with a 300 km range
Cost – Relatively low cost
Lilium being another start-up trying to develop a new transportation opportunity is eligible for our support and let us hope more companies try to make the sci-fi flying-car concept a reality.
